In 2008 BBC Springwatch sponsored the development of ” Breathing Places” for community benefit and wildlife protection. Dol-llys Housing was lucky enough to receive a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to create a Breathing Place on a piece of Dol Llys Hall land.
As a result of the grant, part of Dol-llys land was opened for use by local people.
The “Breathing Place” plot comprises a productive vegetable fruit and flower area, a polytunnell , a summerhouse (for rainy day shelter), a pond filled with creeping, slithering, flying and swimming creatures and a seating area for those resting from gardening or just watching.
The Breathing Space is still used by two of the original pioneer gardeners but others have since taken up new community gardening opportunities in the area.
We still feel very fortunate to have received the money for the equipment, the tools and the raised beds. The main ‘gift’ however was the advice, expertise and sheer hard labour given by the volunteers since June 2008.
